average-cost-of-destination-wedding

By Amitesh Fauzdar and team, wedding planners in Jaipur

Ask five people for the average cost of a destination wedding and you will hear five answers. One says ₹20 lakh. Another says ₹50 lakh. A cousin who married in Udaipur says "closer to a crore". A website says ₹25 lakh to ₹70 lakh. They are all telling the truth. They are just measuring different weddings.

That is the real problem with "average". It sounds like one number, but it hides the guest count, the number of nights, the type of hotel, the month, and whether rooms, taxes and guest travel were counted. So in this guide we do two things. We show you the honest ranges for India, with the sources behind them. And we show you how to work out your own average, in ten minutes, from your own guest list.

If your wedding is in Rajasthan, keep our destination wedding cost in Jaipur guide open alongside this one. It has venue-by-venue numbers that this guide uses as its base.

What most families actually spend

  • The common band: ₹35–75 lakh for 100 to 200 guests, 2 to 3 days, a 4-star or heritage venue. That is where most planned destination weddings land.
  • The entry band: ₹18–35 lakh for around 150 guests at a haveli or banquet resort, with two functions.
  • The luxury band: ₹75 lakh to ₹1.5 crore for 250 guests at a palace or 5-star hotel, and ₹1.5 crore or more for a full palace buyout.
  • The number to remember: about ₹35,000 to ₹55,000 per guest for a mid-range two-day wedding, before GST. It falls as the guest list grows.

Why every "average" you read is different

Before you trust any figure, check what it counts. Here are the five things that make one source say ₹25 lakh and another say ₹70 lakh for the same word, "destination wedding".

What differs Why it changes the number Typical effect
Guest count Food and rooms grow with every guest. Décor and photography do not. Every 50 extra guests adds roughly ₹8–14 lakh in our model
Nights and functions A third night adds rooms and meals for everyone. About ₹12–21 lakh at 150 guests
Venue tier A 3-star banquet and a palace are different products. A palace can cost three times a 3-star venue or more
What is counted Some figures include guest rooms, taxes and travel. Others do not. 20–40% of a final bill
Month of the wedding Peak season runs 1.3x to 1.5x the off-season price. 20–40% on the same wedding

Look at how this plays out. One published guide puts the "budget destination wedding" at ₹20–30 lakh for 80 to 120 guests. Another puts the typical wedding at ₹25–70 lakh for 100 to 150 guests. These two do not disagree. The first assumes a smaller list and a shorter plan, and the second assumes more guests and a bigger venue. A guide that tells you a number without telling you the guest count has told you almost nothing.

You can also test a guide with simple maths. Some pages show catering at ₹2.5–5 lakh for a full wedding at ₹1,200–3,000 a plate. At 100 guests, one meal at ₹3,000 is ₹3 lakh. A wedding has four to six of them. So the true food bill is three to five times higher than that figure suggests. When a number does not survive a calculator, do not build a budget on it.

India's wedding economy in three numbers

It helps to see the bigger picture first, because it explains why prices keep rising. Brokerage Jefferies, in a report quoted by Business Standard, puts the Indian wedding industry at about ₹10 trillion, or US$130 billion. That report counts 8 to 10 million weddings a year, and it says the average Indian wedding costs more than three times a family's annual household income. The same article quotes financial planners who budget ₹25 lakh to ₹2 crore per child for a wedding today.

Two more points from the same research, as reported by Kotak. The all-India average for a wedding of any kind is around US$15,000, about ₹12 lakh. A destination wedding is not the average wedding. It is a planned, travel-heavy event for a smaller group, and it costs several times more. WeddingWire India's director has put destination weddings anywhere from ₹20 lakh to several crores depending on the place and the scale.

Average cost of destination wedding by guest count

Guest count is the single biggest driver, so we start there. This table comes from the contracts our team has negotiated at Jaipur properties. It shows total cost for a two-day wedding at three venue levels, before GST. We have added the cost per guest, because that is the number that lets you compare.

Guests 3-star or budget 4-star or mid-range 5-star or luxury Per guest at 4-star
100 ₹25–33 L ₹38–54 L ₹66–95 L ₹38,000–54,000
150 ₹35–48 L ₹55–76 L ₹90 L–1.3 Cr ₹36,700–50,700
200 ₹44–62 L ₹70–94 L ₹1.1–1.6 Cr ₹35,000–47,000
300+ ₹63–90 L ₹90 L–1.3 Cr ₹1.5–2.5 Cr ₹30,000–43,000

Read the last column. The per-guest cost falls from ₹38,000–54,000 at 100 guests to ₹30,000–43,000 at 300 guests, because décor, photography and entertainment are mostly fixed. That is why trimming the guest list is a smarter cut than trimming décor. Our wedding budget for 100, 200 and 500 guests page lays out the same idea for other sizes.

The five rungs: what each budget band really buys

Band Total cost Typical plan Typical venue
Intimate heritage ₹18–35 L 150 guests, 2 days, 2 functions Haveli, banquet resort or small heritage hotel
Mid-range royal ₹35–75 L 200 guests, 2–3 days, 3 functions Heritage haveli or 4-star hotel
Luxury palace ₹75 L–1.5 Cr 250 guests, 3 days, 4 functions 5-star hotel or premium palace
Ultra-luxury buyout ₹1.5–3.5 Cr 300+ guests, 3–4 days, full property Palace buyout
Couture or celebrity ₹3.5–10 Cr+ 500+ guests, 4–5 days, several venues Multiple palaces, flown-in teams

These are Jaipur-based ranges, but the shape holds across India. Most families land in the second row. So when you compare two figures, first match the row each one belongs to.

Work out your own average in ten minutes

Here is the exact method our planners run before any site visit. Split the bill into costs that grow with every guest and costs that stay flat. Then add them up.

Costs that grow per guest: food and rooms. Costs that stay flat: décor, photography, entertainment, the planner and miscellaneous items. Let us run it for 150 guests, two nights, a 4-star hotel in Jaipur.

Line How we count it Per guest For 150 guests
Food and drinks 4 main meals at ₹1,800–2,500, plus 18% GST and 10% service charge ₹9,216–12,800 ₹13.8–19.2 L
Rooms ₹6,500–15,000 a night, two guests sharing, two nights ₹6,500–15,000 ₹9.8–22.5 L
Décor and lighting Three functions, flat – ₹10–14 L
Photography and film One team, flat – ₹1.5–2.5 L
Entertainment DJ and folk artists, flat – ₹2–4 L
Miscellaneous Power, hampers, transport, flat – ₹3.5–3.5 L
Planner fee Fixed fee – ₹3–5 L
Buffer 8% for changes – Included
Estimated total ₹31,373–50,904 ₹47.1–76.4 L

The result, ₹47.1–76.4 L, matches the 4-star row in our guest-count table. That is what you want from a model: it should land close to what a real contract shows. Replace each number with your own quote and you have your average, not someone else's.

Cost per guest per night: the number that compares any two quotes

Totals are hard to compare when guest counts and nights differ. So divide the total by guests and by nights. For the model above, ₹47.1–76.4 L across 150 guests and 2 nights comes to about ₹15,687 to ₹25,452 per guest per night.

Now test it on two real budgets from our own files. Sample A is an 80-guest, 2-day wedding at a heritage haveli, costing ₹32.4 lakh. That is ₹40,500 per guest, or ₹20,250 per guest per night. Sample B is a 250-guest, 3-day wedding at a 5-star palace hotel, costing ₹1.22 crore. That is ₹48,720 per guest, but only ₹16,240 per guest per night.

The bigger palace wedding is cheaper per guest per night. The reason is the same flat-cost effect: a large production spreads over more people. When a quote looks expensive, run this one calculation before you decide.

What moves your number most

If you can only change a few things, change the ones that matter. Using the 150-guest model above, here is what each lever does.

Lever What changes Effect on the bill
Guest count 50 more or fewer guests ₹7.9–13.9 L either way
Number of nights A third night, with rooms and two more meals ₹11.8–20.9 L more
Plate rate ₹500 more on every plate, for four meals ₹3.8 lakh more
Décor level Premium themed instead of basic, per main function ₹5–9 lakh more per function
Month Peak season (1.3x to 1.5x) against off-season (0.6x to 0.8x) A ₹60 lakh shoulder-season wedding becomes ₹78–90 lakh in peak and ₹36–48 lakh in monsoon
Venue tier A 5-star hotel instead of a 4-star Usually 1.5x to 2x the total

The month is the quiet giant. In one real case, a two-day palace wedding quoted at ₹2.2 crore in February dropped to about ₹1.5–1.6 crore in July. That is a ₹60 lakh saving from moving the date alone. If your muhurat allows it, shoulder months such as October and early March give most of the weather at a fraction of the peak premium.

Rajasthan against the rest of India

Rajasthan is where most of India's palace weddings happen, so its numbers shape the national average. This table compares five Rajasthan cities for a two-day wedding with 150 guests, starting prices from our contracts.

City Starting cost (2 days, 150 guests) Character Trade-off
Jaipur ₹15–35 L Royal heritage, 40+ venues, best connectivity Crowded in peak season
Udaipur ₹25–50 L Romantic lake city 20–30% pricier, fewer rooms
Jodhpur ₹20–40 L Blue city and desert forts Fewer venues, summer heat
Jaisalmer ₹15–30 L Desert fort and golden dunes Remote, extreme temperatures
Pushkar ₹10–20 L Spiritual and bohemian Fewer luxury options

Outside Rajasthan, published guides quote hill-station weddings from about ₹8–10 lakh and Goa from ₹15 lakh upward. Those are starting prices, and they rarely say how many guests, nights or functions they include. Treat them as a floor, not as an average. Home or abroad: how the average changes

India has been pushing the "stay home" idea hard. The Ministry of Tourism launched a wedding-tourism campaign to position India as a premier wedding destination, as described in this Press Information Bureau release, and the Prime Minister has urged families to "Wed in India" instead of spending abroad. The cost logic is simple. An overseas wedding adds costs that a domestic one never has.

The table below uses illustrative assumptions for 80 guests who need flights. Replace them with live fares before you rely on them.

Cost Domestic (Rajasthan) Overseas (illustrative) Why it differs
Return flights for 80 guests ₹6.4–12 L (assuming ₹8,000–15,000 each) ₹28–56 L (assuming ₹35,000–70,000 each) Distance and fare
Visas, insurance and forex Nil ₹4–12 L (assuming ₹5,000–15,000 each) Paperwork and fees
Vendor movement Local teams and artists Flown-in crews Fewer local options
Planning risk Known venues and vendors Contracts in a foreign country Cancellation and currency exposure

On these assumptions, guest travel and paperwork alone add ₹26–56 lakh when you go overseas, like for like. That is one reason many families look at palaces in Rajasthan first. The royal setting is similar. The flights are not.

The 20–40% that quotes leave out

Average figures usually leave out the lines that arrive late. This is the list we put into every budget at the start.

Hidden cost Typical range How to control it
GST 18% and 10% service charge on food ₹12–14 lakh on a ₹50 lakh food bill Ask for tax-inclusive quotes
AV, sound and production ₹5–20 lakh Bundle with the décor vendor
Generator and power backup ₹2–6 lakh Confirm in writing who provides it
Liquor licence and bartending ₹1–3 lakh Ask about the venue's bar licence
Guest transport ₹3–10 lakh Use partner hotels and coach contracts
Welcome hampers and gifts ₹3–15 lakh Source locally in bulk
Baraat logistics ₹1–5 lakh Use fixed-price local packages
Extra security and permissions ₹2–5 lakh Confirm what the venue provides
Vendor meals and rooms ₹1–3 lakh Negotiate a vendor rate in the catering contract

Let's Create Your Dream Wedding

How to read any venue quote

  1. Ask for the quote in lines: rooms, food, venue, décor, power and service charge. A bundled number hides what you can negotiate.
  2. Check whether GST and service charge are included. A 28% difference on food is not small.
  3. Find the guest count and nights behind the price.
  4. Note which functions are included. Mehndi and haldi often count as extras.
  5. Ask what happens above and below your guaranteed guest count.
  6. Look for the music cut-off time and any overtime charge.
  7. Check whether outside caterers, decorators and DJs are allowed, and at what fee.
  8. Confirm the cancellation and date-change terms before you pay any token.
  9. Divide the total by guests and nights, and compare it with the numbers in this guide.
  10. Get every promise in the contract, not on a call.

How to lower your average without shrinking the wedding

A lower bill does not need a smaller celebration. It needs better choices, in this order. First, the date. A shoulder month or a weekday can take 20 to 30 percent off venue and room rates. Second, the guest list. Cutting 40 names who were never going to travel saves more than any décor trade-off. Third, the format. A two-day plan avoids the cost of a third night, which is ₹12–21 lakh at 150 guests. Fourth, the plate. A good vegetarian menu with live counters can feel richer than a long non-veg list at a higher rate.

Use the venue itself. Heritage properties already carry beautiful architecture, so strategic lighting and fewer florals can save ₹5–10 lakh per function. Local Rajasthani folk artists cost far less than flown-in entertainers, and guests remember them longer. And ask for a flat-fee planner, because a planner who earns a percentage of your spend has little reason to bring it down.

What a planner adds to the average

In our two sample budgets above, the planning fee was about 7% and 5% of the total, and it is a fixed amount, not a share of what you spend. For a wedding of this size, fees range from ₹1.5 lakh to ₹15 lakh depending on the plan, from a focused Essential plan at ₹1.5–2.5 lakh to a full Royal plan at ₹8–15 lakh. The fee is usually repaid in negotiated venue rates, a cleaner contract and no surprise bills in the wedding week.

That is the work of a destination wedding planner in Jaipur, and we have done it for more than 12 years. We build the budget from your guest list first, so you see your own average before you visit a single venue.

FAQs

What is the average cost of a destination wedding in India?

There is no single figure, because it depends on guests, nights and venue. For a planned wedding with 100 to 200 guests over 2 to 3 days, most families spend ₹35–75 lakh. Entry weddings start near ₹18–35 lakh, and palace weddings run ₹75 lakh to ₹1.5 crore or more.

What is the average destination wedding cost per guest?

For a mid-range two-day wedding, about ₹35,000 to ₹55,000 per guest before GST, falling to ₹30,000–43,000 at 300 guests. Divide any quote by guests to check it.

How much does a destination wedding cost for 100 guests?

About ₹25–33 lakh at a 3-star or budget venue, ₹38–54 lakh at a 4-star hotel and ₹66–95 lakh at a 5-star property, for a two-day wedding before GST.

How much does a destination wedding cost for 200 guests?

About ₹44–62 lakh at a 3-star venue, ₹70–94 lakh at a 4-star hotel and ₹1.1–1.6 crore at a 5-star property, for two days before GST.

Is a destination wedding cheaper than a traditional wedding?

It depends on guest count. A destination wedding costs more per guest, because you pay for rooms and travel, but the guest list is smaller. Many families find the total similar and the experience richer. Compare per-guest cost and total, not just the total.

What is the cheapest month for a destination wedding in Rajasthan?

July to September is the cheapest, at about 0.6x to 0.8x the peak price, but you need covered venues and a rain plan. October and early March give good weather at lower rates than the November to February peak.

How much does a destination wedding cost in Rajasthan?

Starting costs for 150 guests over two days run about ₹15–35 lakh in Jaipur, ₹25–50 lakh in Udaipur, ₹20–40 lakh in Jodhpur, ₹15–30 lakh in Jaisalmer and ₹10–20 lakh in Pushkar.

What costs do families forget in a destination wedding budget?

GST and service charge on food, sound and production, generator backup, guest transport, welcome hampers, baraat logistics, security and vendor meals. Together they can add 20 to 40 percent to a quoted budget.

How much should I keep as a buffer?

About 8% of the total for last-minute changes. It is the number we put into every budget.

How early should I start planning a destination wedding?

Start 12 to 18 months ahead for peak dates, 8 to 12 months for shoulder months and 4 to 6 months for off-season dates. Top décor, photography and entertainment teams book early.

Does a destination wedding abroad cost more than one in India?

Usually yes, mainly because of guest flights, visas, insurance and flown-in vendors. On our illustrative assumptions, travel alone adds ₹26–56 lakh for 80 guests.

How much does a destination wedding planner cost?

Planning fees run from about ₹1.5 lakh to ₹15 lakh depending on the plan, which was about 5% to 7% of the total in our own sample budgets. A fixed fee is better than a percentage, because it does not rise with your spend.

The short version

The average cost of a destination wedding in India is not one number. It is a range that moves with your guest list, your nights, your venue and your month. For most planned weddings it sits between ₹35 lakh and ₹75 lakh, and it works out to roughly ₹35,000 to ₹55,000 per guest for a mid-range two-day plan. Work out your own with the per-head formula, test every quote against cost per guest per night, and keep 8% aside.

Want your own number? Call or WhatsApp us on +91-9289184507 with your guest count, dates and city, and we will send a line-by-line estimate within 48 hours.

Where these numbers come from

All-India figures (the ₹10 trillion industry, 8 to 10 million weddings a year, the average wedding at three times household income, and the planners' ₹25 lakh to ₹2 crore range) come from the Jefferies report as quoted by Business Standard and Kotak. The WeddingWire India range comes from a Tribune report. Guest-count tables, the five rungs, the Rajasthan city table, the hidden-cost list, season multipliers and the two sample budgets come from contracts our team has negotiated in Jaipur. The per-head model, the per-guest-night test and the levers are our own calculations. Overseas flight and visa figures are illustrative assumptions. Prices change, so confirm before you pay.
